Article Snippet: To some degree, the 2009 pandemic of H1N1 swine influenza, which is the first influenza pandemic in decades (Sullivan et al., 2010), was not expected because the subtype drawn our attention in recent years was H5N1 subtype (Leroux-Roels and Leroux-Roels, 2009; Palache and Krause, 2009; Pappaioanou, 2009; Vajo, 2009) and the species was avian (Skeik and Jabr, 2008; Swayne and Kapczynski, 2008; Globig et al., 2009), so the cross-species infection was focused between avian and human (Kuiken and Taubenberger, 2008; Michaelis et al., 2009).. It is shown that the highly unusual reassortant H1N1 influenza virus carries genetic segments derived from swine, human and avian influenza viruses (Pan et al., 2009).. Therefore, the first piece of information we got from the current pandemic is that the barrier between species is not strong enough, otherwise we would not expect to see the cross-species infection between swine and human; the second piece of information is that the barrier between subtypes is not strong enough too, otherwise we would not expect to see the cross-subtype mutation. |
